Background of the Study

Child growth monitoring is essential for detecting malnutrition and developmental delays at an early stage. In Nigeria, home-based health education programs have been implemented to empower mothers and caregivers with knowledge about proper child nutrition, hygiene, and immunization (WHO, 2024). Despite these efforts, child malnutrition and stunted growth remain prevalent in Plateau State (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).

Home-based health education involves community health workers providing guidance to caregivers within their homes, focusing on topics such as breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and the importance of growth monitoring (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024). This study investigates the impact of home-based health education on child growth monitoring in Plateau State, assessing its effectiveness in improving child health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Malnutrition and growth stunting among children under five remain serious challenges in Plateau State. Many caregivers lack knowledge about proper feeding practices, immunization schedules, and the importance of growth monitoring (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). While home-based health education has been introduced to address these issues, its effectiveness in enhancing child growth monitoring practices has not been well-documented.

This study evaluates the role of home-based health education in improving caregivers’ knowledge and practices related to child growth monitoring.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of home-based health education on caregivers' knowledge of child growth monitoring.
  2. To examine the relationship between home-based health education and child nutritional status.
  3. To identify challenges faced in implementing home-based health education programs.

Research Questions

  1. How does home-based health education impact caregivers' knowledge of child growth monitoring?
  2. What is the relationship between home-based health education and child nutritional status?
  3. What challenges affect the implementation of home-based health education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Home-based health education has no significant effect on caregivers’ knowledge of child growth monitoring.
  2. There is no significant relationship between home-based health education and child nutritional status.
  3. The implementation of home-based health education programs does not significantly improve child health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on caregivers and children in Plateau State, assessing the impact of home-based health education on child growth monitoring. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and variations in health education delivery across different communities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Home-Based Health Education: Health education provided to caregivers in their homes by trained health workers.
  • Child Growth Monitoring: Regular measurement of a child’s growth indicators, such as weight and height, to detect malnutrition or health risks
  • Malnutrition: A condition caused by insufficient or imbalanced dietary intake, leading to growth and health complications.
